Stephan Moss was born in Wyoming and grew up in Montana and Idaho. He studied piano with Teala Bellini, whose teaching traces back to Clara Schumann. He completed a B.M. in composition at the University of Redlands and a D.M.A. in harpsichord performance at Claremont Graduate School, where he studied with Preethi de Silva. In addition to his work for Pomona College in Information Technology, he has performed both as a harpsichordist and pianist and is an accompanist at Scripps College.
